MLB 2009 Comeback Team Of The Year
2009 MLB Comeback Team of the Year:
Baseball Season Package On Sale Now
C: Victor Martinez: Awful year in 2008. He had been the best hitting catcher in baseball for a few seasons before battling injuries last year. His continued transition to first base, should allow him to stay healthy and focus on hitting. V-Mart battled injuries last season and if healthy in 2009 he should return to his hitting ways: .300/ 25 HR/ 90 RBI/ 170 H.
1B: Paul Konerko: Paul’s first half of the 2008 season was plagued by injuries and mediocrity. His second half, however, was a bit a rejuvenation period, hitting 53 points higher, clocking 13 of his 22 homers, and nearly cutting his strikeout totals in half. It doesn’t look like he will quite reach his best days, but should be close at 32 years old in 2009: .278/ 28 HR/ 88 RBI/ 35 Doubles.
2B: Chone Figgins: Figgins battled injuries in 2008 and as a result really didn’t contribute. He is a really important piece to this team due to his speed and ability to play multiple positions. Because he can play everywhere, we’ll put him as our second baseman here. If healthy he has a good chance to become one of the premier leadoff hitters in 2009 with Vladimir Guerrero, Bobby Abreu, and Torii Hunter batting behind him. I could see him returning to his old self with numbers like this: .285/ 95 R/ 55 RBI/ 45 SB/ 170 H.
3B: Ryan Zimmerman: At 24 years old, he really isn’t coming back from too much. However, in 2008 he played in just 106 games. In 2009 he’ll have a big bat batting behind him, Adam Dunn. He will most likely see more pitches with the addition of Dunn and even Josh Willingham. Zim should continue to grow with numbers like this: .280/ 27 HR/ 95 RBI/ 175 H.
SS: Rafael Furcal: When he played last year he was a shoe in for the All Star game. Trouble is, he only played in 36 games in 2008. He was one of the lucky ones this off season to land a big free agent contract from his incumbent team, the Dodgers. He missed out on Manny Mania last year and if Manny is back this year Furcal will prosper at the top of the lineup. His comeback will be contingent on his health, Manny coming back, and the continued growth of young studs like Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, and James Loney. Look for Raffy to lock in and put up these type of stats in 09: .280/ 10 HR/ 55 RBI/ 110 R/ 30 SB.
OF: Carl Crawford: He played in just 109 games last year and all of his numbers were down. In 2009, his team is coming off a rejuvenating year by reaching the World Series. Crawford fell into the backdrop last season behind the pitching staff and Rookie of the Year, Evan Longoria and playoff Superman B.J. Upton. This season Crawford will enter the year at the magical baseball age of 27 and is playing for either a $10M team option or for a big free agent contract. If he goes to free agency he’ll be fighting with two other All Star caliber outfielders, Jason Bay and Matt Holliday, for what could still be a tight market. Look for Carl to get back to numbers like this: .290/ 14 HR/ 70 RBI/ 40 SB/ 12 Triples.
OF: B.J. Upton: You are saying: "How can two players from an overachieving World Series runner up team, have two players on a comeback team?" Well Crawford played below his career averages last year and Upton fell way short of his numbers in 2007 in 2008. Everyone is only remembering Upton’s playoff tear, but during the regular season he hit 15 less homers, 15 less RBIs, batted 27 points lower, 107 points less in slugging percentage, and 110 points less in OPS. He did have more hits, walks, and doubled his stolen base total, so it wasn’t all bad. I will still use him on our comeback team: .295/ 22 HR/ 85 RBI/ 45 SB.
OF: Coco Crisp: He hasn’t been bad the past few years, but he has played far less games and at a far less clip since his Cleveland days. The Sox used him as a platoon player with Jacoby Ellsbury last year, but now he will be an everyday centerfielder back in the AL Central where he played his best days. With more at bats and more of a routine, the 29 year old will post numbers similar to those of his 2005 season: .285/ 12 HR/ 65 RBI/ 30 SB/ 35 Doubles.
DH: David Ortiz: If he is as healthy and strong as manager Terry Francona says, the AL East better watch out. He’s still only 33 years old and we’ve seen big men play at an all star caliber later into their mid 30s (albeit maybe with help from the needle). Look for Papi to hit in this ballpark: .275/ .385 OBP/ 31 HR/ 102 RBI/ 35 Doubles
SP: Erik Bedard: When he pitched he was solid in 08, but he only started 15 games. He’s still in his pitching prime at 29 and he’ll be looking to cash in after the year in a weak free agent market for pitchers. It’s simple; if he can start at least 30 games, he’ll pitch like this in 09: 14 W/ 3.35 ERA/ 200 K/ 195 IP.
SP: Fausto Carmona: Can he follow his fellow staffmate’s lead from last year and win comeback player of the year (see Cliff Lee)? Lee has taken the reigns as the staff ace, so Carmona can hopefully go back to unsuspecting young stud as the staff’s #2. The whispers in Cleveland are that he is healthy, which is nice. This team could be comeback team of the year, so why not throw in another pitcher. Carmona at 25 years old is still growing as a starter, look for him to get close to his 2007 season: 16 W/ 3.75 ERA/ 130 K/ 215 IP.
SP: Barry Zito: He can’t be this bad. He won a Cy Young just a few years ago with Oakland. Now that everyone has accepted the fact he signed a deal way above what his market should have been, he can hopefully go forward. He was great in Oakland when he wasn’t the only pitcher to put the ball in his hands to win the game. Zito was part of a rotation in Oakland where focus was evenly distributed with Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder. Well now he doesn’t have to be the staff ace, that role goes to the NL’s 2008 Cy Young Award Winner, Tim Lincecum. Bigger things are also expected from young hurlers Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez. Look for the "Other Barry" to quietly get back to form and put up these numbers: 14 W/ 3.97 ERA/ 160 K/ 210 IP.
SP: Justin Verlander: After being the leader in the rotation in 2006 and 2007, he fell flat on his face last season. He’ll enter 2009 at 26 years old, so he still hasn’t hit his pitchers peak. Detroit swung and missed with Dontrelle Willis last season after he bombed even in AAA. This year they brought in a solid hurler in Edwin Jackson who will hopefully take some heat off the young ace, Justin Verlander. Like Zito, Verlander may not have the makeup to be the sure-fire staff ace. Detroit would like for Willis to be serviceable to go along with Verlander, young up and comer Armando Gallaraga, and Edwin Jackson. They also still hold out hope that Jeremy Bonderman can contribute in 09. Detroit has shortened the game for their starters in 2009 with a pen that includes Fernando Rodney, Joel Zumaya, and Brandon Lyon. Verlander should get back to: 15 W/ 3.80 ERA/ 155 K/ 205 IP.
SP: Francisco Liriano: He comes in as the fifth starter here becomes his comeback began last year. Now with nearly 18 months since his surgery, he should be back to his 2007 form. The Twins will look for him to become their new Johan Santana, but he will have support from young hurlers Scott Baker, Kevin Slowey, Nick Blackburn, and Glen Perkins, all of whom pitched solidly in 2008 and recorded 11+ wins. Liriano is super talented and will continue to develop into a stud this year, but is not in his prime yet: 17 W/ 3.25 ERA/ 170 K/ 210 IP.
CP: Chris Ray: Move over George Sherrill and that horrible brim on your hat, Ray will take the reigns back full time in 09. Sherrill got the nod last season and saved a bunch of games for the O’s, but did it as ugly as possible. Ray was stellar in 2007, but battled a few minor injuries and lost his job to Sherrill last season. But now, the O’s are all about youth and that means Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, Felix Pie, and Chris Ray. Ray should put up these numbers in 09: 30 Saves/ 2.95 ERA.
