Texas Rangers Tickets - Nolan Ryan Expects Rangers To Take Down Al West
After adding free agent Vladimir Guerrero to a team that won 87 games a year ago, team President Nolan Ryan thinks that the Texas Rangers should be able to finish the 2010 season as the AL West champs. The Rangers did significantly improve in 2009 from a 2008 season that saw them finish below .500, but they will still have plenty of obstacles in their way if they are to win the division.
Not only will they have to compete with the Los Angeles Angels, who have won the AL West each of the last three seasons, but the Seattle Mariners have become a trendy pick to win the division as well. But what the Rangers do seem to have for the first time in a while is a vocal team president with high expectations, which is the first step to competing year in and year out in the uncapped Major Leagues.
Perhaps even more importantly than the actual Guerrero signing for the Rangers will be that he will no longer be mashing home runs for division rival Los Angeles. Even though Guerrero has had a bevy of health issues in recent years, he is still a big bat that can have a significant impact on any lineup and his loss will be certainly felt by the Angels.
The Angels also lost ace John Lackey to the Red Sox, making their usually dominant starting rotation seem more pedestrian than ever. Not to be discounted is the additional loss of Chone Figgins, their multi-talented leadoff man who will now provide a spark at the top of the Mariners' lineup instead of the Angels'. Though the Rangers aren't likely to win 100 games with questionable starting pitching and health issues in their starting lineup, it doesn't seem that a team in the AL West will come close to the 97 wins that the Angels had last season, making the division completely up for grabs.
Instead, the major problem that the Rangers might have is the Seattle Mariners, who finally emerged this offseason from a series of contractual blunders, including Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexon as well as others. The Mariners haven't touched the postseason since 2001, when they won 116 regular season games and made it to the ALCS. You can argue that the Mariners had the most productive offseason, signing not only Figgins but ace Cliff Lee from Philadelphia, as well.
Adding Lee to a starting rotation that already has Cy Young candidate Felix Hernandez, the Mariners are in prime position to improve on a team that also won 87 games a season ago. Talented starter Erik Bedard also is coming back from an injury-plagued 2009 season and if he can remain healthy at all, the Mariners could boast the best starting three in the majors to go with a solid young closer in David Aardsma.
Even in what is shaping up to be a very competitive AL West, the Rangers are loaded with talent that will definitely make them a tough team to overlook. Ian Kinsler and Michael Young remain among the best infielders in the American League and slugger Josh Hamilton is capable of carrying a team on his back if he can keep his shoulder issues at bay. Adding in Guerrero, even though it's likely his MVP years are behind him, the Rangers are a scary team that appear to be set up to vie for the division title.
Much as he did on the field for more than 20 years, Nolan Ryan is leading the Rangers with his usual enthusiasm and moxie, even though he now does it behind a desk and in front of a microphone. What he has made clear is that he believes the Rangers have the right combination of talent and experience to make a significant splash in the AL West. With such an open race expected, Texas Rangers tickets will be at a premium for the upcoming season. For the first time in a while, the Rangers appear to be a title-contending team, and with his bold proclamation, Ryan still appears to be a man whom it is unwise to go against. Just ask Robin Ventura.
